I went to Jenks High School during the 1980’s. My abuse began in 6th grade and only ended upon my graduation. I was daily harassed and made fun of for “being gay”. I was told I was gay before I understood the meaning or my own sexuality. School was torment and an absolute hell. Transitions from one class to the next was precipitated by me thinking ahead of what the least travel path to the next class would be so that I might avoid as many people as possible. No one ever intervened. Not a teacher, no administration, and no peer ever acknowledged my abuse. The exception was my senior year. I was dating a girl from another school and she came to pick me up for lunch. She met me outside my class and walked maybe 75 yards to the exit and her car. Once in the car she told me, “Oh my God, I have never felt so much hate directed at someone”. Oddly I had not even noticed it that day, I had become numb to it. Years later I would realize I was gay. I would again revisit my high school abuse as my family exiled me from their lives, from touching nieces/nephews accusing me I would give them “AIDS” (which I didn’t have)…and sending me Biblical versus of my supposed damnation to hell. I’ve never been invited back to a family holiday and have never received an apology from anyone. I’ve take my pain and harnessed it into a laser. I now have a PhD in psychology and help others including bullies who step into my office. My abuse has left permanent scars on my existence but I control the fingerprints I leave on the souls of others.
